Raahe

Raahe

The sea and archipelago, the old part of the town with its wooden houses, vibrant cultural life, inviting museums and numerous events throughout the year make for a highly enjoyable stay in this historic town.

Wanha Raahe is one of Finland’s best-preserved concentrations of nineteenth-century wooden houses. The area has about 150 old residential buildings and about 200 commercial premises. Walking through Wanha Raahe’s alleys and listening to the travel guide’s stories about the district and its inhabitants, you will get a strong sense of the history of the area. To continue your journey back in time to the 19th century, it’s well worth dropping in to the Langin Kauppahuone café, where you can enjoy delicious pastries. After that, you can admire the sea view from the steps of Pakkahuone, the oldest local museum in Finland. Raahe Museum’s most famed attraction is the world’s oldest surviving diving suit, Wanha Herra – the Old Gentleman of Raahe. It can be found the Kruununmakasiininmuseo museum’s collection of diving exhibits.

Raahe is proud of its nature, and the walkways in Vihanti and the hiking trails of Hummastinvaara offer a good variety of hiking opportunities. The true pearl of Raahe is Raahe archipelago, which was judged Finland’s best hiking destination in 2016. It is just a short distance from Wanha Raahe, the old part of town. You can reach the archipelago by private boat, by kayak (available for rent from Pikkulahti rowing centre), or by boat from the museum harbour. You can take in the sun on the beaches of the deserted islands of the archipelago, watch the sheep freely grazing, enjoy wild strawberries, scan the skies for white-tailed eagles and the waters for grey seals, and seek out the catch of the day on a fishing excursion. In the wintertime, the frozen sea of the archipelago offers a variety of hiking opportunities. Some winters, the icy surface of the outer archipelago is dramatically broken into massive piles of pack ice, some of them several metres high. These are formed by the action of storms, and are truly a natural wonder.

Although proud of its strong heritage, Raahe is also up to date with technological trends. By downloading the Glopas app, can learn listen to presentations about Wanha Raahe and the archipelago anywhere you want, anytime. You can also enjoy a good variety of visual art in the Kari Juva sculpture park, the exhibitions of Galleria Myötätuuli and several home ateliers.

All in all, Raahe provides plenty to experience for visitors – and being less than an hour’s drive from Oulu Airport, it’s far closer than you think. When coming to Raahe by train, get off at Vihanti station. You can get right to Raahe town centre by bus. Services in the town are conveniently within walking distance, and you can rent a car or bicycle to venture further afield. There are enough free parking spaces here for us all.

A warm welcome!
